How do I protect my card during shipping?
Protecting your card during shipping is crucial to ensure it arrives at the grading company in the same condition it left. The goal is to prevent bending, scratching, and any other damage that could lower its potential grade. This involves securing the card in multiple layers of protection and choosing a sturdy shipping method.
First, sleeve your card in a soft, acid-free penny sleeve to prevent scratching against any hard surfaces. Then, insert the sleeved card into a rigid card saver or a top loader. These provide much greater rigidity than just a penny sleeve. Tape the top of the card saver or top loader closed to prevent the card from sliding out during transit. Use painter’s tape or masking tape, as these are less likely to damage the card should they come into contact with it. Next, wrap the card (in its protective case) in bubble wrap, providing adequate cushioning on all sides. Place the wrapped card inside a small, sturdy box. Fill any remaining space in the box with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or more bubble wrap to prevent movement during shipping. Securely tape the box closed and consider adding fragile stickers to the exterior. Finally, insure the package for the card’s declared value to protect yourself against loss or damage during shipping. This adds an extra layer of security and provides recourse if something goes wrong.
